Counselling

Family Services helps provide professional counselling services for individuals, couples, and families.

While some specialised counselling services are delivered by Family Services, most counselling needs should be directed to the accredited professionals listed in the Community Resource Directory below. These community resources, as they are known, work in private practice and actively participate in the Brisbane Family Services office’s “Community Resource” network.

How do I find a Counsellor ?

The majority of general counselling needs such as for depression, anxiety, grief and loss, marriage, infidelity, divorce, parenting, autistic spectrum, sexual abuse, domestic violence, addictions (drugs, alcohol, gambling, pornography, food), eating disorders, self-harm, suicide, self-esteem, relationship difficulties and other mental illnesses, etc. should be directed to a suitable counsellor listed in the Community Resource (CR) Directory. Members, with the help of family, friends, leaders or ministers, should prayerfully select the most appropriate counsellor for their needs and contact the counsellor directly to discuss services, costs and to arrange counselling appointments. The CR Directory also contains helpful suggestions and advice on how to select a counsellor for your needs.

If assistance is required to cover the costs of the counselling, members should meet and discuss their need for financial support with their Bishop or Branch President. Priesthood leaders will need to contact the counsellor directly to authorise fast offering payment in behalf of a member.

Community Resource (CR) Directory

The CR Directory contains a list of profiles of fully qualified and registered counselling professionals from a variety of professional disciplines (including counselling, social work, psychology and occupational therapy) who participate in the Brisbane Family Services office’s Community Resource Network. They are active church members who participate in regular training and mentoring with Family Services staff.  Whilst they are independent in practice and are not employed by the church or Family Services, these professionals in the Brisbane Family Services’ Community Resource Network agree to abide by specified terms and conditions in the services they deliver and the fees they charge,  and provide services in a manner largely consistent with Family Services’ own policies and approaches.  They provide counselling services to members and non-members of the Church, via face-to-face counselling, telephone or online video conferencing.
