Using Ordinances Ready for Temple and Family History

Goal:
Gathering individuals and families to the ordinances of the temple’ is part of the Pacific Area Focus to strengthen faith in Jesus Christ, one by one. This instruction emphasises the importance of temple and family history work and instructs members how to use Ordinances Ready to submit names for temple ordinances.

Objectives:

  • Emphasise the Pacific Area Focus of ‘Gathering individuals and families to the ordinances of the temple’.
  • Teach the principles of temple and family history work, with a focus on the role of the Ordinances Ready tool.
  • At the end of the instruction ensure each adult and youth knows how to:
    1. Submit a name to take to the temple (using Ordinances Ready)
    2. Have become a submitter by submitting a name
  • Members will feel inspired to make this a lifelong endeavour in submitting names and taking them to the temple.

·  By the end of the session, ensure that every adult and youth:

  1. Understands and know how to submit a name to take to the temple using Ordinances Ready.
  2. Has successfully submitted a name, becoming a submitter.

·  Inspire members to view this work as a lifelong commitment—to regularly submit names and participate in temple ordinances on behalf of their ancestors.

Instruction Outline and Activities:

1. Welcome and Introduction (10 minutes)
To be led by the Bishop:

  • Read this quote from Elder Kevin S. Hamilton of the Seventy, Executive Director of the Family History Department:
“President Nelson has taught that the temple is “nourished by names”. It’s up to us to make sure our temples are well nourished with the names needed so our ancestors can receive their ordinances and members can enjoy the blessings of the temple throughout their lifetime”.  (‘An Unprecedented Time for Temple and Family History Work’ Liahona August 2024)
  • Discuss the importance of family history, emphasizing that it connects us to our ancestors and fulfills the commandment to 'turn the hearts of the children to their fathers' (Malachi 4:6) by helping deceased ancestors receive the saving ordinances they did not receive on earth.
  • Share a brief personal experience/testimony of the blessings received through participating in temple and family history work.

2. Instruction: How to Use Ordinances Ready (20 minutes)
Led by the Temple and Family History Committee Members (with assistance from Young Men and Young Women):

  • Explain that qualified names ready for temples ordinances are submitted from FamilySearch.
  • Describe how Ordinances Ready helps us find and submit these names for temple ordinances, e.g., baptism, confirmation, initiatory, endowment, and sealing to spouse and parents. Ordinances Ready helps find qualified names from these sources in this order:
    1. Our own family tree
    2. Our ward and stake member’s family trees
    3. Globally family trees
  • Demonstration:
    1. Show the video 'How to Use Ordinances Ready'
    2. Ask each member to go to the Family Tree app on their phone or FamilySearch.org on their computer
    3. Sign In to FamilySearch
    4. Go through the 7 steps of using Ordinances Ready on their devices (display on screen or provide handouts for guidance)

3. Closing Remarks and Invitation to Become a Regular Submitter (5 minutes)
Led by the Bishop or Ward Temple and Family History Committee Members.

  • Bear testimony of the importance and blessings of temple and family history work.
  • Discuss how becoming a regular submitter can assist us all in gathering individuals and families to the ordinances of the temple.
  • Invite all members to become regular submitters and take the names of those individuals to the temple.
  • Invite all to show a family member or someone you minister to, how to become a submitter.
